PC Graeme Clucas is an advanced Police Motorcyclist who has nine years experience in Roads Policing, five of which have been as a full time Police Motorcyclist. Graeme says:
Another spectacular route for a ride. On leaving built up areas look at the type and condition of the road you are travelling on and get your speed and gear right for every hazard you approach. Look out for poor road surface or tar banding. The A72 has caught out far too many bikers in the past. Read the road, watch for warning signs, chevron boards and slow markings on the road.
Often the countryside can give you an indication of where the road goes. Don’t get caught out when the bend tightens up or there is another one coming up fast. Having spoken with local farmers, dragging motorcycles from their fields is a weekly affair. It makes it an expensive not to mention painful day out. If you can’t see round the bend slow down so you can and stop safely if required. Lots of undulations will unsettle the bike, so beware and do not get caught out by going too fast. Remember, the narrower the road, the greater chance the signage means more and that you may meet an oncoming car. You don’t want to be leaning over with your head on the opposite carriageway at this time! Remember see hazards and plan them into your journey.
Again, this route takes in open farmland where we have the dreaded sheep and its followers, take care and slow down as you pass them. Remember go out and enjoy yourself and keep it on the ‘black stuff’.
